I’m not knocking pens, they certainly work good and look nicer than pencils, but here’s a great urban legend about them (see this Wikipedia entry<\/a> for what really happened):<\/p>\n

When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered that ball-point pens would not work in zero gravity.<\/p>\n

To combat this problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $11 million developing a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to over 300\u00b0 C.
