We offer a wide selection of custom printed promotional products made from wheat straw plastic. We like to have a good understanding of what makes a product “green” or “environmentally friendly” so we did a little research into wheat plastic and wanted to share that.
In the US alone there are over 700 MILLION tons of wheat harvested a year, and that is just the grain from the plant. What happens to the rest of the plant? Some of it gets bailed and used as animal bedding, but most of it is simply worked back into the soil. That wheat straw can be put to another use, making an eco-friendly bioplastic.
Wheat straw contains lignin. That is the part of the plant that gives it stiffness and the ability to stand up. Lignin is first broken down by a bacteria called Rhodococcus Jostii (naturally found in soil) by the bacteria releasing an acid that naturally softens the lignin with any harmful chemicals. Once the lignin is broken down it is mixed with sugar to form a plastic-like substance that be molded just like petroleum based plastics.
Wheat straw can also be broken down into pulp that can be pressed into shapes, much the same way wood is made into paper and cardboard.
Which ever method is used, the result is product that is made from a plant by-product renewable resource instead of a petroleum (finite) resource. I also like that many (but not all) of them also have a very artisan look to the plastic.
