Some differences between a Good Rrecycler and a Not-So-Good Recycler:
GOOD RECYCLER: You fill up the recycle bin every week with cans, bottles, and jars.
NOT SO GOOD: You give the recycle bin to the kids to use as a toboggan.
GOOD RECYCLER: You take your used motor oil to the nearest recycling station or collection facility.
NOT SO GOOD: You avoid the used-oil problem by never-changing your oil. You recycle engines instead.
GOOD RECYCLER: You recycle not only your newspapers but also your phone books, magazines, and cardboard boxes.
NOT SO GOOD: You leave your newspapers in the bathroom stall at work after you’re done. Doesn’t that count?

The first time I saw a plastic water bottle that was marketed as being biodegradable I thought, “Cool! Wait…what makes this start to degrade? What if this starts degrading when I’m drinking out of it…or in the heat of the dishwasher? What if my kids drink of out of this as it is falling apart, won’t they be digesting plastic and chemicals and what else?”
So we did some research!
Biodegradable plastic bottles and coffee mugs etc need a microbial environment to start biodegrading, like a landfill.
Here is an excerpt from BioGreen.com, a leader in biodegrable plastics and manufacturer of the very popular BioGreen Bottles and now the Hollywood Biogreen Bottle which better explains the process:
“Degradable means the plastic is only broken down into smaller pieces and will never completely disappear as is the case with starch based plastics. In many cases these products begin to degrade the moment they are made which leads to a shortened useful life. However this is not the case with BioGreen PlasticTM.
Products made with BioGreen Plastic do not begin biodegrading until they are placed into an active microbial environment such as landfills or compost piles. The process takes from approximately 1-5 years.
The additive is completely organic, non-starch based and non-destructive to the environment. It is also non-toxic and actually helps the environment. This additive creates an accelerated biodegradable cycle which occurs in landfills or compost facilities. The final product left behind with BioGreen is Humus and Methane (Bio-Mass and Bio-gas).
