Green Marketing, Eco-Friendly Promotional Products:

Wow, these are catch-all terms that are ready to be taken advantage of by liars and thieves.

We had a client recently that proclaimed they were reselling 3M post it notes made of recycled paper in all colors under the rainbow.

We have worked closely with 3M as a post it note distributor for years. 3M only offers one color of recycled content paper.

Our potential client stated they could get all colors in 3M post it note pads and cubes with recycled content.

Thought I knew better, I spoke with 3M, and that is simply not the case.

The client said another distributor would put in writing that all paper colors were recycled content.

I offered to give them a phone a number to 3M, or have our rep. at 3M call them. Client declined.

So what’s better, to have someone tell you what you want to hear or to get the truth? This client preferred not to hear the truth; we prefer not to sell our souls.

Another client this week wanted recycled content Flash Drives. These are also known as thumb drives, usb drives etc.

We were able to offer the same recycled content memory sticks at half the price.

The trouble was that the competition was offering to plant a tree for each memory stick purchased.

Since our price was half the price of the competition, and the client insisted on having trees planted, I priced out seedling spruce trees and was able to offer the memory stick and a seedling evergreen for 75% less than the “competition”!

Further, I found a local land owner, a church, a school and a nursing home all willing to accept the gift of the trees and plant them in the spring.

Our environmentally-conscious client wanted to order now, and get a certificate stating the trees had been planted.

I explained that planting seedling trees in the winter will result in possibly zero trees, because they cannot establish roots when the ground is frozen.

I then explained that if they wanted to get what they wanted: recycled content printed USB drives and planted trees, I could get them a certificate stating the trees would be planted in April or May 2008.

I really do not know how much more accommodating we can be.
Our main objective is to sell reasonably priced promotional products with our client’s imprint or printed message.

The client could easily take their 75% savings and plant trees on their own in the spring.

Apparently, they wanted a feel-good deal and trees planted immediately, despite that most -if not all- would die due to lack of roots.

Use It or Lose It: Fiscal Budget Year-End Ideas

Well this is a catch 22. I almost chose not to write about it. As we at ImprintItems.com decide who is working between Christmas and New Year, we know some clients will need to spend budget money or lose those dollars for next year.

After 20 years in this business, we recognize this reality. Some people, organizations, and non-profits must spend down the 2007 budget by year end. If they do not, they will not be allocated the funds this upcoming year.

We are not in a position to be the budget police, so we are simply offering some year end budget spending ideas, or solutions.

It really makes no sense to place an order for 2,000 t shirts and have us ship them to you blank.

We did this for one client because they assumed they had to have the goods delivered and could later have us print the shirts. They successfully spent the funds and got a quick invoice from us. The problem was, in June of the next year they suddenly needed us to print and deliver the shirts in 5 days. They paid overnight freight to get the shirts to us, we printed them in 3 days, but then we had to bill second day air freight to ship the shirts back to them! The client ended up paying twice as much as if we had kept the shirts; plus, the sizes we had shipped at the end of the fiscal budget year in December were adult shirts and now they found out they needed youth sizes.

A better solution would be to order $2000 worth of shirts. If needed, pay the bill by credit card and do not place the final order until you know the shirt sizes, colors, and where they would eventually ship to.

Other clients trying to USE IT OR LOSE IT include government agencies and non-profits. Some wise clients in this year-end budget debacle have simply paid for $2000 or $X amount of promotional products then when they decided what they actually needed, we applied the credit to the product. Possibly, they decided they would make better use of printed post it note pads than t-shirts.

We cannot tell you what your organizations’ year end budget spending policy is. We count on you to know the rules. We can get you an invoice within hours. We can take a credit card right away.

The week after Christmas is notoriously a time that people like to spend with family. But if you wake up on December 26th and find you need to spend your budget in the next day before taking to the ski slopes, you can call on us.
