How Sticky is too Sticky?

Post-it Notes, Sticky Notes, Adhesive Notes: they may seem like different names for the same thing, but they often mean very different products. Does it matter? Well, that depends on if you like having to clean adhesive residue off of things, or if you like having the note you left for someone missed because it ended up on the floor.

Here are the basics:

Post-It Notes were invented by 3M and were the first re-positional notes available and the first to be offered with a custom imprint. They use adhesive of a quality and consistency that only 3M can offer. We have never had a complaint about the quality of a 3M Post-it pad. All Post-it brand notes are printed by 3M at their production facility in Minnesota and nowhere else. If a company is telling you they print Post-it Notes in house, they are lying to you or selling you something else.

Sticky Notes are the brand name of the pads made by Bic. After working with Bic on a dozen orders, we decided their product was not something we could stand behind or cared to promote. Due to this and other problems with orders manufactured by Bic we no longer offer Bic Sticky Notes as a standard option. We will sell you a Bic pad if you insist upon it and have a large enough order, but only after explaining the quality concerns we have with Bic’s Sticky Notes and trying to find you a 3M product that will fit your needs and budget.

There are several other companies offering “Adhesive Notes” with similar quality issues to Bic.

So what is the difference?

Bic and the other generic brands can offer slightly better pricing in some cases (mostly small orders with lots of different colors in the printing), but not in all cases (we have never seen 3M’s price be beat on larger orders).

The biggest difference in the pad is the adhesive used. 3M has been making post-it notes for over 30 years and 3M’s Post-it Notes have a perfect amount of the correct type of adhesive on every sheet in every pad. The adhesive used in the pads made by Bic and other generic brands is often too sticky or not sticky enough and often has an inconsistent application on the paper.

I once made the mistake of using a Bic Sticky Note on my computer monitor, but never again. It took glass cleaner to remove the adhesive residue left by the Bic Sticky Note and the resulting dust spot (in the perfect rectangle shape of the note’s adhesive area) from my monitor.

Bic’s pads are printed using 4 color process printing, so they can offer more colors cheaper, but can NEVER get an exact color match. 3M’s standard Postit Notes are printed using spot colors. They can guarantee an exact PMS color match on every pad. Your blue will always be your blue when printed in spot color, but it will often be off a little bit when printed with the process color that other companies use. 3M does offer 4 color process printing if you need it on all the pad sizes they offer.

3M also offers a 4×6 Value Line Pad and a 4×3 Value Line Pad if you have an imprint that can be printed well in a 4 color process and want the value that 4 color process (CYMK) printing offers.

Need something sticker?

3M offers Super Sticky Pads for an additional 15% that are great for sticking on vertical and non-smooth surfaces that need just a little bit more “sticky-ness” for the notes to stay in place.

We have been working with 3M and selling Post-it notes for almost 20 years. If you have a question on custom printed Post-it Notes or if you would like to place an order please give us a call and we will be happy to help you.

Litho Tabs Regulate Admissions and Identify Paid Attendees

Sure you can use a wristband for admissions control, but did you know that the same wristbands can be ordered on ebay, and that the most common colors can be purchased at Office Depot?!

Museums, Art Institutes and other institutions that have been around for years find that Litho Tabs are the ideal way to identify paid customers.

These subtle little metal buttons can be worn with casual or dress clothes.
It’s a bit tough to convince a client in a tuxedo to slip on a pink plastic wristband.
If you do, he may be mistaken for someone that just slipped out of the rubber wall hospital.

You can order Admission tabs with your logo or message, in several sizes and shapes.

These little suckers are a steal at 2 1/2 cents to 10 cents each.
Litho tabs are inexpensive because they are stamped out of a metal sheet and printed many buttons at a time.

Metal Litho Tab buttons have been popular for political campaigns for decades. This popularity is largely due to the low price for a substantial little promotional product.

Go Green!

Recycled gizmos and gadgets are a great way to get your name out there, or your committment to the environment recognized:

Most of us recycle plastic bottles, newspapers and glass.
The resulting recycled products are then said to be made of post consumer recycled content.

Industry and companies also recycle products. When a widget is molded, the excess trim plastic is often saved in a box or dumpster. The plastic, is then melted, pushed through the equivalent of a giant play dough pumper, and the string of molten plastic dipped in to a water bath to cool and harden. What
you then have is basically a rigid string of plastic which is chopped into small pieces or pellets, and remelted.
The remelted plastic is then molded into new products.

Products made of this type of material are said to be manufactured from Post Industrial recycled content.

The benefits are huge. Recycled material is cheaper than its counterpart, virgin materials. In part because it is already on site and does not need to be shipped in. It also saves cost, by not needing to pay to have it landfilled. Of course keeping this stuff out of the landfills also has the benefit of simply not being in the landfill to begin with.

ImprintItems.com is committed to offering a line of promotional products that is made partially or wholly of recycled content.

We have items that contain recycled plastic, wood, glass, metal, and even newsprint, denim and recycled currency.

Not long ago, most recycled promotional items were simply a doohickey that was made solely to use up the recycled materials available.

Today, with innovations we have new items with tons of utility that use recycled contents. ImprintItems.com offers recycled content items that include coasters, combs, pens, pencils, rulers, piggy banks, dog dishes and much more.

Actually, recycled advertising specialty items that can be personalized with your imprinted logo or message are becoming available faster than we can add them to our website.

If you are looking for a promo with recycled content, we would love to brainstorm with you. Simply tell us how many items you are interested in ordering, your budget, theme and the audience your will be targeting or giving them to.

We will promptly email you a flyer with some schwag that will meet your needs.

Many items you will see are black in color. This is because no matter what colored recycled material is used, black coloring can be added. This makes the most use of the recycled content.

We do offer other colors of recycled content custom decorated items. As would be expected, white and clear products must be made of white and clear reprocessed material. Thus, these colors are less available and sometimes at a slightly higher cost.

Consider a Green Product for your next promotional product campaign or trade show hand out.

Tony and Dan Go Deer Hunting

Tony and Dan went deer hunting, and Dan shot a deer. They started to take it back to their truck. They were pulling it by the hind feet, but that made the fur snag on the ground, making it hard to pull.

Another hunter, seeing their dilemma, told them it would be easier to pull the deer by the rack. That way the fur wouldn’t snag on the ground. The guys thanked the man, and he went on.

After a little discussion, they decided to drag it by the rack. Dan turned to Tony and said,”Ya know, this is a lot easier to drag now.”

Tony said,”Yeah, but we sure are getting a long way away from the truck.”

Have a safe hunt!

Sylvester Sloganeer and Jimmy Jingle

I was surfing the web today and noticed that a big trend is using the word “sloganeer.”
Sloganeer is defined as “someone who coins and uses slogans to promote a cause”
(source:www.thefreedictionary.com/sloganeer)

Wow, Deja Vu for this old dog! I recall my early days as an Advertising Specialty Counselor (that’s what we called ourselves in the late 80’s). I was at my first table top show, where all of our suppliers and manufactures with products they hoped would be discovered had a small 8 ft exhibit. I met this guy who called himself Jimmy Jingle. Jimmy had it all: sunglass, hats, bow ties, and shoelaces all imprinted with -you guessed it- Jimmy Jingle. This outfit drove home the fact the Jimmy could offer you anything with your imprint on it.

At this time, I think Jimmy was pushing 70 years of age. He generously let me pick his brain, and gave me a ton of insight about the promotional products industry. Jingle explained that in his early days there were a very limited number of imprintable products available for his clients to buy. I believe he said the top 10 included ashtrays, lighters, matchbooks, pens, shoehorns, tape measures, shot glasses, and a few others that slip my mind. Anyway, to sell this limited product line Jimmy would have to come up with creative slogans. For example, why would a gas station want to give away shoes horns? With Jimmy’s creative jingles, he had persuaded many a service station owner to do just that. Thousands of shoe horns were sold personalized witht the message “slip on into XYZ company for a speedy oil change.” Jimmy Jingle proclaimed to be the best jingle writer in the industry. He was definitely a salesman people would remember.

So in keeping with the trends, I am considering a name change. How does Sylvester Sloganeer fit? We really can help you come up with slogans, but more importantly we offer an extensive line of products; Jimmy Jingle would be envious of the products that we can have emblazoned with your slogan.

We even offer imprints on walnuts!

Chilidog…Chilly Dog…silly blog!

What the heck?

Chilly Dog Cozy Blog…What sense does that title make for a blog? and why blog to begin with?

If at 20 years old I would have been told in the future blogging would be a welcome break from the daily work chores, well, I would not have known what that even meant.

Recently we were faced with a big challenge: what should we name our Blog? We came up with Chilly Dog, Cozy Blog.

Why does a blog need a name? Is this just a passing fad?

Ok, enough. I have succumb to the idea that a blog is akin to the fax machine. If we did not get a blog now, we would surely regret it in 5 years.

So the name is chosen. As for the Chilly Dog part, is that because we are cold here n Minnesota in the winter? Should we have a picture of cold canine to promote our widgets that can be imprinted with your advertising message?

If we choose the cold pooch approach, should we use a cute looking pathetically cold puppy dog, or would a dashing huskie pulling a sled on ice better promote our Embroidery Caps?

Wait just a cotton-picken minute, did we mean Chilly Dog or did we actually mean Chili Dog?

When my mother was alive, we would visit Bullwinkle’s Bar and Grill at seven corners next to the University of Minnesota campus.
We always ordered a coney dog (aka chili dog).
Maybe ImprintItems’ blog was meant to be called Chili Dog, Cozy Blog.

If that were true, it would certainly be a great tie in with custom etched or printed beer glasses and mugs. A cold frosty one always goes down well with a chili dog.

Of course, if that logic holds, we would also sell rolaids and alka seltzer. These also tie in well with chili dogs.

Was life simpler before blogs? Not sure. They are fun to write. It’s kind of like airing your laundry. Maybe someone else will read it, but if not at least I had fun typing it.

Measuring Tape

A team of engineers were required to measure the height of a flag pole. They only had a measuring tape, and were getting quite frustrated trying to keep the tape along the pole. It kept falling down, etc. A mathematician comes along, finds out their problem, and proceeds to remove the pole from the ground and measure it easily.

When he leaves, one engineer says to the other: “Just like a mathematician! We need to know the height, and he gives us the length!”

ImprintItems.com offers tape measures printed with your custom logo or message.

None of your Bees-wax!

I can remember when the response, “it’s none of your bees wax!” was the trendy way to tell a younger sibling to mind their own business. I’m sure my seven-to-nine year old self said this to my little brother more times than he wanted to hear it.

Ironically (if only for this post) he is now a business major and one evening to keep from dozing off in a late-night study group, clicked a pop up proclaiming “create your own custom full-color business cards!!! 10,000 for just $3.99 plus shipping!!!” or some similar thing in bright, flashing colors. In a jiffy, the no-longer-sleepy study group had designed their very own Study Group Business Cards.

Whether you have a legitimate business or not, store and carry your business cards in one of our great business card holders. They protect your cards from getting folded, bent, smooshed, swished, dog-eared and twisted, and they also look pretty flashy when you get to pull it out to hand someone your card!

fine print: this blog does not promote, recommend, or advise clicking on computer pop ups. Neither do we not advise it, although we do find most pop ups personally annoying. We only advise that you check out our business card holders.

More good news! You don’t have to wait for your computer to pop up a business card ad! Trust Collegiate Concepts to print your business cards and business card magnets for you!
