We have had several clients come to us in the last year looking for either a metal or plastic water bottle that was not made of Lexan (also called acrylic or polycarbonate) and was not the “squirt top” sports bottle. They had concerns over reports they had read about BPA (also known as Bisphenol-A) leaching from some #7 plastics, mainly Lexan (also know as polycarbonate). We are not scientists, and do not want to get involved in the debate while there is limited data available on the matter (we will let you make up your own mind on the subject) but, we did want to meet the needs of these clients to the best of our ability.
Right now there are two options available, stainless steel bottles and plastics that do not contain BPA. Aluminum bottles are also a great alternative to plastic, but are coated on the inside to protect the taste of the water with the same epoxy that is used in canned foods, and most people that are concerned with BPA don’t like the idea of the epoxy coating either.
UPDATE:
We now offer 3 more options for BPA Free bottles. Poly Pure PETE (the same plastic that is used in bottled water) and both Camelbak and Nalgene bottles made from Tritan copolyester (a hard, durable plastic that is BPA Free with the same positive qualities of Lexan). Old school to the rescue. The first water bottle that pushed the screw top / loop top water bottle into common use happens to be made of HDPE (which does not contain BPA). That bottle is the original Nalgene HDPE bottle. It is available in 12oz, 16oz, 32oz, and 48oz sizes, screw and loop caps and with both a wide and narrow mouth openings.
Another BPA free water bottle option that is popular is stainless steel. We currently offer a 25 oz Stainless Steel Water Bottle with a wide mouth twist top spout that allows you to add ice and still be able to drink form it without a making a mess. It is made with all FDA Compliant Materials and is great for schools, outdoors, sports, fitness, biking and gifts.
